Notes

Envisioned as an insert to performances of Carnival of the Animals, pianists take turns asking each other musical jokes. The work playfully references Beethoven and Mussorgsky works as punchlines to the pianists’ banter:

“Why did the chicken cross the road?”
“Because he was lured by Beethoven’s call of fate!”
“Because she wanted to see her baby pictures at an exhibition!”
